Mental Health Care Plan –
Better Access to Mental Health Initiative

What is a Mental Health Care Plan, and how do I get one?

A Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP), is a recommendation written by your GP, Psychiatrist or Paediatrician, for sessions subsidised by Medicare. The practitioner will evaluate your eligibility under the Medicare guidelines. You must have a diagnosable mental health condition that impacts your daily functioning and causes a significant level of distress. A Medicare rebate is available to individuals who have obtained the MHCP from their GP.

How many sessions do I get under the MCHP?

This MCHP entitles you to a maximum of 10 individual psychology sessions per calendar year (1 January – 31 December). After using all 10 sessions, you may be eligible for a further 10 sessions under the Covid Better Access scheme.

Do you process Medicare claims instantly?

Not at the moment, though we hope to offer this service soon. For now, we supply a copy of your invoice for you to claim a rebate through Medicare. You can lodge in person at a Medicare office or via your smartphone on the Medicare App.

Does Medicare cover Skype and phone sessions?

Medicare does allow for Telehealth sessions; please contact us for further information; 0438 960 095 between 9:00 am - 6:00 pm weekdays.

What should I bring to my appointment?

Any documentation relevant to your sessions; this may include referrals or reports from your GP, a Psychiatrist, Paediatrician or any other health professionals including Dieticians or Physiotherapists. We encourage bringing anything you feel will assist the Psychologist in supporting you.

What should I expect from my first session?

The first session involves essential paperwork, including personal information, confidentiality and consent forms, fees and other vital details about your sessions. If a GP or Psychiatrist has referred you, the details of your MHCP will be covered.

Following on, the initial session involves learning more about what brought you to therapy and developing a greater understating of issues or concerns you may have. Your Psychologist may also inquire about family history or social relationships, medical history or any past counselling. This information helps us to understand and identify any existing triggers in your life that may hinder the resolution of your concerns. We’ll also determine an approximated timeline for your therapy and sessions.

Cancellation Policy

If you need to cancel or change your appointment time, please contact us 24-hours before your scheduled session. A cancellation fee applies if less than 24 hours notice given. Please note you cannot claim a rebate for a cancelled session.

Do I need a referral?

You do not need a referral to consult with a Psychologist unless you wish to claim Medicare rebates. If you would like to claim with Medicare, please see your GP for a Mental Health Care Plan.

For private health insurance, documentation isn’t necessary. The only exception to this is for clients claiming on HCF. HCF require that you utilise a Mental Health Care Plan provided by a GP and use all of the sessions covered by Medicare before you can claim on your private HCF medical insurance.

How many sessions will I need?

Each person’s journey through therapy varies and depends on the nature of why they’re coming to therapy. There’s a different outcome for each individual, which determines how many sessions are needed. Sessions can range from one-off to extended periods for more complex concerns.

How does confidentiality work with a Psychologist?

All information disclosed in your session with a psychologist is confidential. There are two exceptions to this rule. 1) if you are at risk of harming yourself or others, and, 2) concerning court orders. If either presents with your therapy session, your Psychologist will discuss it with you.
